PBL and Librarian as an Equal Partner: Case Satakunta
Information and Knowledge Management is part of the advanced professional studies (master’s level) in Satakunta University of Applied Sciences. The content of the course is designed by three teachers – one of them information specialist. This puts a major challenge to joint planning, the sequence of contents, the learning assignments as well as their scheduling, etc. Since the idea is to integrate different views and give a holistic, yet deep, understanding of various issues, the input of each teacher must also be carefully thought through and organized. The three colleagues each has a special topic to cover during the course:
1. Information literacy and introduction to business intelligence
2. Knowledge management and learning in organizations and
3. The use of e-learning environments in business information.

Authentic Working Life Problems: Case Seinäjoki
Problem based learning (PBL) is the main method of teaching in the physiotherapy degree programme. Teaching is based on real authentic working life problems. The information specialist is present at the first phase of the PBL-cycle, when the students are defining the problem and their information needs. The information specialist is present also at the end of the cycle when the use of information is emphasized. In addition, the students have the possibility during tutorials to discuss the information retrieval process with the information specialist. This possibility is important, because during the PBL-learning process sources are evaluated, and concepts together with information needs are defined constantly.
